Garmisch-Partenkirchen is one of the most famous winter destinations in the German Alps. The town lies at the foot of the Zugspitze, which rises to 2,962 meters and provides a dramatic snowy backdrop throughout the winter months.
Originally two separate villages—Garmisch and Partenkirchen—the towns were united in 1935 before hosting the 1936 Winter Olympics. Today, the historic streets still feature traditional Bavarian houses decorated with colorful frescoes known as Lüftlmalerei.
In winter, the area becomes a paradise for outdoor activities. Visitors come for skiing, snowboarding, winter hiking, and scenic cable car rides up the Zugspitze. The surrounding valleys and forests offer peaceful snow-covered walking paths, while the town center is filled with cozy restaurants, cafés, and alpine lodges.
